Apex Enterprises, one of the city's largest owners and managers of rental property, is proposing a 14-story, 450,000-square-foot building with a 300-room full-service hotel, fitness center and pool, meeting space, up to 60 housing units, two restaurants, a 10,000-square-foot grocery store and 550 mostly underground parking spaces. The project, less than 500 feet from Monona Terrace. Ideally, Apex would get needed approvals and begin construction in the spring of 2011, with completion two years later, Bosben said.

A new Hyatt Place hotel,located near West Towne Mall. Kraig Sadownikow of American Design and Build, Inc., the construction company for the new Hyatt Place, will be presenting plans to the commission for the six-story, 127-room hotel on the southwest side of the mall, located near Toys R Us. Sadownikow said the design for the building will have the modern brick and glass features of other Hyatt Place hotels and will include a restaurant and expanded lobby area. The seven-story, $185 million facility is the beginning of the planned Wisconsin Institutes for Medical Research, which is one of the largest projects ever in Madison. The three-tower complex, to be finished by about 2015, will house 1,500 lab workers and cost more than $600 million, officials say. More than $10 million in state money has been spent; another $72 million is being requested, with a plan to seek $150 million more. The massive project, which will also feature research on heart disease, brain disorders and other conditions, will move many researchers from aging buildings on the UW-Madison campus.

After a few delays, a 151-room Hyatt Place Hotel is on track to open in spring at 333 W. Washington Ave. as part of the Alexander Co.'s Capitol West development. Concrete has been poured for about half of the 11 floors, said Don Marvin, executive vice president of development and construction for LodgeWorks of Wichita, Kan., the hotel developer. When the hotel was proposed in May 2007, the developer said the hotel could be finished in late 2008.

Mayor Cieslewicz said he raised the possibility of the developer renovating the historic building as part of a hotel expansion. City officials have previously said the hotel concept is on the scale of the 500 rooms being sought by the Greater Madison Convention and Visitors Bureau. "It's just something we're exploring," Cieslewicz said. "We don't know if it will work."

The Milwaukee Common Council on Tuesday gave final approval of a detailed plan development for the proposed Rivianna development. Rivianna Development Group LLC, which includes developers Bob Schultz and Harry Drea, want to build a building on a vacant lot in the Fifth Ward at 236 S. Water St. with three 15-story towers on top of a 4-story base. The development, along the south side of the Milwaukee River, and just south of the Historic Third Ward, would have 186 apartments, a 128-room hotel and 11,000 square feet of retail space. The developers say all of the construction work will be done by union laborers.
